India has often been seen as a mysterious land to foreigners. But what is more mysterious is our Indian movies. Murder Mystery movies were the foundation of all mystery films in the earlier days of Bollywood. There used to be a very common storyline which depicted the content of almost every film. Here is what a typical mystery, suspense-thriller looked like in the 60s or 70s
- Victim is Murdered
- It looks like an Accident
- But the Protagonist suspects it is not
- He begins his investigations
- He finds things which nobody believes
- In the end, the least suspected person turns out to be the criminal
Well, that’s a Bollywood mystery movie for you in 6 Bullet points. But that is no longer the case anymore. Over the years the Hindi Film Industry has Evolved a Lot. Our current movies can not be summarized in just a few bullet points or even one paragraph. The story nowadays is complex enough to make the mystery more mysterious.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a murder mystery, kidnapping mystery, horror or even comedy mystery. The List goes on and on.
Demand for Mystery Movies
Almost all actors have worked in such movies in their career. But few directors have the skills to make the best mystery movies. For example, Abbas Mustan are known for making suspense or mystery movies. They have hardly gone outside this genre. They did make a pure comedy film with Kapil Sharma which was quite successful, but apart from that, the director duo has stuck to making movies which thrill people.
Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood -- Aamir Khan has also stepped into working in a mystery movie. His Popular Box Office Hit Talaash was his attempt and it was a very difficult to predict the movie. Any person watching Talaash for the first time could not even guess what the movie entails.
But a Major Problem with Many Mystery movies is that once their climax or plot is leaked on Social media or audiences, they suffer at the box office. This is what happened with Talaash. Where every movie of Aamir Khan easily crosses 200 or 300 crores at the box office, Talaash barely made it past Rs. 100 crores. Farhan Akhtar even had to request people to not disclose the plot of the movie to the public. But Indian audience had no respect for what he had to say.
But is it true for all Movies?
No. There are some movies no matter if know everything about them are a delight to watch. One such example is Dhrishyam starring Ajay Devgn. This film is a remake of a Malayalam Movie and it has been made in more languages too and it was a phenomenal success in all of them.
Dhrishyam has such an amazing storyline and screenplay that, even if you know everything about the mysterious climax of the movie, you can watch it again and again. And this movie was a Big Hit in all versions. The Hindi Version was also a success as it collected a lot of money at the box office.
Some Disappointments as well
We have praised our Bollywood mystery movies quite a lot. But this doesn't mean that all of them are good. Many are disappointing as well. In fact, there are more bad movies than there are good movies.
A Large list of crappy movies includes detective movies. We have hardly seen any detective movie do well at the box office. List of such flops from major actors includes Bobby Jasoos starring Vidya Balan and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi starring Sushant Singh Rajput.
But BOTY Provides you with a list of some of the best Bollywood mystery movies sorted by their ratings and box office collections. Check out this list and rate your favourite movies.
