  • This was Bhansali's first ever film based on history.
  • The director thought of making Baajirao Mastaani even before directing his first film.
  • Initially, Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai were about to play the lead characters. But the idea flopped due to their breakup in real life.
  • Further, Salman recommended Katrina Kaif to play Mastaani but things didn't work out.
  • The director then approached Kareena Kapoor for Mastaani & Rani Mukherjee for Kashibai. This idea failed too.
  • On Salman's recommendation, Bhansali auditioned Bhumika Chawla for Kashibai. But things didn't work out in her favor.
  • After a decade, the director approached Ajay Devgan for Bajirao. But his fees demand turned it down.
  • After the success of Ram-Leela, Bhansali finalized Ranveer Singh seeing his dedication & potential.
  • Later, Deepika Padukone & Priyanka Chopra were signed for the roles of Mastani & Kashi Bai respectively.
  • Deepika underwent special dance classes to learn Kathak & Kalaripayattu. Ranveer also learned Kalaripayattu.
