On its arrival at the box office, Sholay didn't receive positive reviews from the critics. Due to this, it performed poorly in the first two weeks in the theatres. However, after the positive word of mouth from the audience, it witnessed a jump in its collection and picked the pace.
After gaining a momentum at the box office, it soon emerged as the highest grossing film of 2017. Sholay witnessed the longest theatrical run for 286 weeks which was later broken by the Hindi movie, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Because of its re-release for several times, Sholay's overall collection increased further and it enjoys a great place in the list of highest grossing Indian films of all time.
