As she followed her dream of becoming a singer, she started learning classical music and at age of sixteen she participated and won the television music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma on the channel Zee TV. That’s where she caught the attention of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali who saw the potential in her and thought that she would be best for his upcoming film Devdas.
She sang five songs in that film and she went on to win her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Dola Re” in the film Devdas. Who would have thought, a Filmfare award at the age of 16!! It’s like a dream come true!
Her talent had surely mesmerized the film industry and the audience. Her immediate success paved the way for many more songs to be sung in the voice of this beautiful nightingale. She bagged a whole lot of awards including nine Filmfare Awards South for Best Female Playback Singer, four National Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards including five for Best Female Playback Singer, three Kerala State Film Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
How was she handling the stardom and success that embraced her at this young age! She has been an inspiration to many youngsters not just as a singer but also as a celebrity to look up to. So much so, 26th June 2010 was declared as "Shreya Ghoshal Day" by the governor of U.S. state Ohio, who honoured her for her spectacular voice.
