This is a true story of the battle of Longowala between a small battalion of Indian Soldiers and a large Pakistani strike force in 1971. The war started when Pakistani infantry brigade crossed the border, 16 km away from  Longowala. Despite being less in number, Indian soldiers fight bravely for the pride of their motherland and at last the opponent bites the dust.

Movie Reception

Border received a superb welcome at the box office and it turned out to be the highest grossing film of 1997. Right from its opening to its final day in the theatres, it gained laurels from the audience. After a strong opening week, the movie showed a little fall in the second as well as the third week.

The music, as well as the dialogues of the war film, was praised by the critics and the audience. Due to the strong content, Border received a positive word of mouth from the audience and it fared strongly in the theatres all over the world. It didn't get affected by any other film and achieved a great milestone in the Indian as well as overseas theatres. Because of its huge profit in its lifetime, it was declared a blockbuster film.

  • J.P Dutta made this movie to pay homage to his pilot brother, who was a pilot in IAF and died due to the crash of Mig aircraft.
  • Original weapons, ammunition, and equipment of Indian Army were used in the movie to give it a realistic touch.
  • Earlier, Sanjay Dutt was signed for the role of IAF pilot which was later given to Jackie Shroff due to the jail sentence to Sanjay Dutt.
  • Sunny Deol played the role of Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, who was martyred in the Battle of Longowala. In real life, he was awarded Param Vir Chakra by the Indian government for his contribution in the battle.
