This movie is based on the real life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil real hero who works for social awareness causes. He is the social entrepreneur and has won Padma Shri Award for his invention. He invented the machine which makes low-cost sanitary napkins. His major agenda was to generate awareness around traditional unhygienic practices related to menstruation in rural India. This movie is based on the real life activities of this Tamil hero.

Padman opened well and earned over Rs. 10 crores on its first day. Due to a stable growth over the weekend, it managed to cross the mark of Rs. 40 crores. The positive word of mouth of the audience made it possible for the film to endure little drop on the weekdays. In its first week, Padman collected over Rs. 60 crores at the box office.
The film received advantage due to the partial holidays in the second week which helped it to earn over Rs. 75 crores in its first two weeks. However, the film showed a substantial drop in the third week and earned over Rs. 80 crores in the domestic market and took its worldwide total over Rs. 100 crores. Padman was a hit at the box office.
Apart from earning an excellent amount in the theatres, it left an important message regarding the importance of women sanitation.
