Synopsis

A poor barber’s fortunes turn when Bollywood’s biggest star comes to his village to shoot a film. When word gets out that Billu the barber knew Sahir Khan as a child, everybody’s suddenly his best friend. But honest Billu downplays the relationship, and gets accused of fraud.

Movie Reception

Billu opening day collection remained decent and hovered around Rs. 3 crores. It witnessed a jump on the first Saturday as well as Sunday and took its total over Rs. 12 crores. The film held well on Monday and dropped decently over the weekdays to earn Rs. 17 crores in the first week.

On its second Friday, the film didn't earn well and hence earned at low-level in the second week. In its lifetime, it grossed Rs. 23 crores in the domestic market which signaled a moderate performance of the film. Billu earned well in the overseas and its worldwide total reached near Rs. 47 crores.

The music of the film also played an important role in attracting the audience to its theatres and hence made a significant contribution to its total earning.

  • Billu is the only film of Shahrukh Khan and Irrfan Khan together.
  • The director, Priyadarshan cast Irrfan Khan for the first time in the lead role in the movie till date.
  • Before Lara Dutta, the actresses Tabu, Juhi Chawla, Ameesha Patel, rejected the female lead in the film. Finally, it was given to Lara Dutta.
  • Akshay Kumar was offered the lead role but he declined because he didn't like the script.
  • Tabu rejected the offer to play the female lead because she didn't want to work with Irrfan Khan.
  • For the second time, Shahrukh Khan played the fictionalized character in his film career after the movie, Om Shanti Om.
  • The song "You Get Me Rolling" was re-created because Shahrukh Khan wanted to include more female voice in the song.
  • Earlier, the title of the film was "Billu Barber". But the makers were forced to remove "Barber" because of protests from hairstylists community. Later, movie's name was selected as 'Billu".
